Plague Faire 2024 potluck was on another level. Everyone stepped up for the first ever competition potluck and the masses were well fed. To incentivize extra effort we provided prizes for the first and second-place dishes to receive the most votes for best-dish.
Jake donated a disc to the cause and I sewed this one-size one-shoulder shining hero’s cape. The idea was to make it multi-wear and universal to fit whomever won. Outerwear is a great focus for plague fair because it’s adaptable to the cold weather and can be made to fit anybody.
This silky green-gold fabric is from the stash of course, and there was the perfect amount for a one-shoulder cape. I adapted a women’s medium coat pattern for the general shape of the shoulder but kept it ambiguous enough again for multi-size.
There is a front and a back, but the two halves are similar enough that it can be worn on the back if you don’t mind a bit of asymmetry. The scarf/over cape element adds the most versatility as it is long enough to be tied to itself or to the under-arm-ribbon in various ways. Tucked through itself or flipped over the shoulder, the styling combinations are many which in my imagination makes the cape suitable for a variety of characters.
I added some trim per a poll a did of guests preferences, since they would be the ones competing. It will be difficult to come up with a garment as practical as this one next year, but I have time to start thinking about it! The winning dish was a vegan butternut squash bisque.
