Breezy summer magic. Pools, beaches, hot-wind on an afternoon walk, and the kimono cover-up made with the power of rectangles.
This fabric has been kickin’ it in the stash for almost a decade where I last made a simple halter dress from the rayon-poly-blend. Sun-protective, wrinkle-free, quick-dry, and not much leftover; just enough for a simple kimono, knee’s length. I lined up the patterns on the carpet and carved a very simple shape.
I was caught up on whim that I needed a cover-up that goes with one of my swimsuits which matches nothing else. The suit is green with long sleeves. I like purple with green, and none of my other cover-ups have sleeves (that’s a lie). It seems odd to wear a halter or sarong with long sleeves underneath.
Now I have a full ensemble to haunt the house in. This is the dress I mentioned that I made a decade ago. I like it better now that it has a partner. I feel physically unfathomable in this pattern, and I like it.
I almost did not differentiate between sleeve and body while cutting the kimono, but decided on the option to tie the wrap at the waist. Above, it is tied with a matching belt. The hem is a simple surge and fold; not enough fabric for collars and cuffs.
The kimono took only an hour or two to make, but I’ve worn it three times already, to the pool or watching blue-jays and tanagers in the garden. Time well spent.
I am drifting through the rest of summer in my weird clothes.
