I’ve heard that if you’re having trouble with hornets or bees, hanging a mock-hornet’s-nest on your patio or deck can deter the pointy-flyers from invading the “already claimed territory” of your fake hornets. Or is it wasps? I don’t know, but it seems like even a paper bag, the approximate size and shape will work.
One of my planned crafts for this summer’s camping trip was the small and easy crochet project to make my own “nest.” Yarn and a crochet hook is so very portable, and this rough shape needs no pattern. I used undyed macrame cordage leftover from this bag project, so we made a dent in the stash as well.
Jake, for his contribution, helped me stuff it with brown paper that was otherwise designated as kindling. The cordage doesn’t hold enough of a shape on its own. The whole project start to finish took about 2 hours, and that’s with revisions to several rows. I like that we got to test it out in a natural setting before hanging it on our permanent back patio; just in case it had the opposite effect and actually made the hornets angry.
After a few days at camp and two weeks on the patio, it seems to be working, and my skies have fewer hornets.
