Year number four of pandemic, year number four of our disease-free, plague-themed backyard renaissance faire. Annually since 2020 we have hosted a small group of friends for a pot-luck party, costumes mandatory!
This year was pretty chill, as if we’ve gotten better at setting up for the fun over time. We set out chairs around a big cook-fire, and banquet tables decorated with drapes, candlesticks, pewter and wooden serving ware. Lawn games included corn-hole, disc-golf putting, and axe throwing. We set up a table for dining and reading tarot, and curated a playlist of medieval music mixed in with some modern covers in a medieval style.
For food I prepared a large pot of wild-boar and creamy potato stew. Loaded with vegetables grown from my own garden, however I’m not growing potatoes. I made various teas and had some aged mead from 2020 to serve as an experiment! I preferred the mead not aged… Friends brought donuts, cider, corn, a vegan stew, steak-jerky, and the anachronistic jalapeno poppers.
In costumes Jake was sporting his brand-new blue leather from Crimson Chains Leather, and he’s finding a lot of use for that fancy hat that I sewed him. I myself was channeling Late Roman Byzantium with my headpiece, but a little to the west with the dress. I finally sewed myself the perfect chemise which I’ll post next week! I sewed everything that I’m wearing, now including undergarments! I’m really digging covering my hair for historical events. It’s seductively practical and warm.
I didn’t take may photos, but I did snap this shot of my exhausted dogs snuggling after the party.
