I have finished all seven doilies which are to be the base of a certain type of centerpiece for my upcoming wedding reception. I enjoy crocheting, but not stitches or patterns that require me to count very high, because I like to crochet while I’m doing other things, like watching TV or listening to a podcast. For that reason, and because I’m not very good yet and need seven of the same(ish) finished product, I chose the simplest stitch I could possibly think of to construct these flat rounds.
Sometimes the simplest stitch works best anyway, as I think it does with this highly textured yarn which Jake picked out at a flea-market in NoHo last year. I experimented with a clamshell pattern or a double crochet first, but a combination of factors like time, not enough yarn, the bulky texture, led me back to a chain net.
I’ve been whittling away at these doilies for the past eight months, chipping away a little at a time in between other projects and reading. I blocked them with the iron on the steam setting because I still don’t really know what I’m doing with blocking, but it worked well enough for my purposes. They have come together in enough time not to cause any stress, and now, I have to assemble the rest of the centerpieces that will sit on top.
