Bridal Jacket Work in Progress

Happy New Year, everyone! Thank you for joining me in 2022.

I had a little time off over the holidays and my biggest project was to construct myself a bridal jacket to wear at our wedding celebration later this year. The project is going great; the pattern that I chose is working out fantastically and everything is fitting very well. However, the project would be much further along, if some of the fabric that I ordered almost a month ago wasn’t still on back-order, and now not expected to be in stock until the end of January.

At present the habutae lining is done and I’ve basted on the shoulder pads. I don’t have much experience with shoulder pads, so I’ve followed the advice of the internet and overhung them 5/8ths inches into the seam allowance. I can’t tell yet whether that’s too much because I need the rest of my fabric to arrive before I can finish the sleeves of the self and sew up the sides of the self.

My plans going forward are to leave a raw edge inside the lining and the self provided that the lining is no longer sheer against the thick polyester shell. If it is sheer, to the serger we go. For closures I’m thinking silvery snaps, invisible from the outside. I find it useful to sew garments in the season, or at least in similar weather to which they’ll be used in, even if that’s not for another year off. In this instance, in this mild January chill, I can easily anticipate whether the coat will keep me warm enough on a cold autumnal midnight without being too much, versus trying to imagine being cold while sewing in July!

Check back to see the finished piece in February (hopefully), as the lining does not betray much of the final design.
