First actual project of my learn-how-to-crochet journey complete! I made a draw-string produce bag out of some low-quality medium weight yarn, not suitable for garments or anything I really want to last. The yarn broke a lot while stitching, so I have a lot of random knots tied into this project and I’m doubtful about how it will wear.
The bottom of the bag is made with single-crochets first in a turned rectangle, then in the round spiral to form an oblong that curls upwards. Next, I made a double-crochet mesh pattern by double-crochet, chain 2, skip 2, repeat.
The top of the bag is finished by double-crocheting without skipping, putting two stiches into the mesh spaces. The drawstring is braded yarn threaded through the top row of dc mesh. I imagine the bag would be good for apples or other somewhat large and unruly produce, but it’s also good for holding yarn and bulky craft supplies.
I’m interested in learning how to crochet because it’s another useful skill of the ages. Making my own fabric opens a whole new world of textural possibilities, and increases self-sufficiency. I’m nowhere near ready for cables and chevrons yet, but I think I’ve got a handle on the basic utility stitches.
