My dog seriously loves pillows. We let her use the human couch pillows, but she is very aware of what things are specifically hers and which things are shared. She loves her beds and pillows and looks so cute using them.
After sewing Tovi a new Christmas coat from fleece, I decided to finish up the remnants by making a patch-work bone-shaped pillow for her. I’ve only made one other dog pillow previously, but took the opportunity to stuff it with soft scraps from my scraps bag of fabric (a plastic bag filled with literal trimmings and threads). It was a great repurposing of materials that would otherwise end up in the trash.
I took the same approach this time around, but, had the added luxury of actual fiber-fill on hand collected from previously destroyed dog toys. The fiber fill went into the ends of the pillow, making them extra soft and comfortable, and the middle is stuffed with fabric scraps where they won’t be felt as much.
Tovi was immediately grateful. She’s already using the pillow at a higher rate than the other couch pillows, probably because it’s new, and I think, because she knows it’s for her.
This kind of easy and functional sewing makes me happy. It’s quick, doesn’t need to be perfect, and uses up materials that I’d otherwise be throwing away. The pillow looks great hanging around the house for the holiday season, too.
Plus you get a lot of photos of my dog because of it. I’ve also included a picture of our holiday mantle this year, because I’m proud of our efforts. Though we don’t have a full-sized tree, we’ve done more decorating than usual this year knowing that we’ll be home for the duration of the holiday. I made those stockings last year, a big undertaking, resulting in precious keepsakes. Jake’s looks bigger because there are already gifts inside. Are you doing any sewing this holiday?
