I made Tovi a new winter coat for the holidays and she is being very dramatic about trying it on for the first time; how dare I make her something long and warm, especially with a high collar to keep the wind off her neck!
I’m still working my way through my stash of fleece scraps from years past and I had just enough for another dog coat in Christmas colors. Tovi has outgrown the warmest sweatshirt she already owned, and because we plan to be outside a lot this winter, I felt she needed something with more coverage.
She doesn’t much care for hoods with her stand-up ears, so I thought I’d try a high collar to give her neck and head variable protection. Flipped up, it covers her ears and most of her head, and flipped down she’s got full ear mobility but still a warm neck. The wind is what gets her in the winter, and I’m hoping this will help.
Her face says, “Mom, why do you do this to me?” To keep you warm, pup. I made the stomach cropped (for peeing) but the back extra long for warmth. Her butt has a strip of ultra-reflective tape on it too so we can see her well at night despite the red color.
I tried to embroider a “snowflake” dog bone on the coat for decoration but it didn’t come out the way I wanted, so I slapped a fleece bone patch on top. The seams are all surged and top-stitched with a cute ric-rac stitch in contrasting white. Tovi is ready to take on winter! We’ve noticed she already wants to stay out a little longer in the cold when she’s got her coat on. Guess she doesn’t hate it that much.
