When we last left off, I had just put down my darkest values and finished the sky and mountains. Continuing to work primarily back-to-foreground, top-to-bottom, I’ve begun building up the tower and filling in the grasses with many overlapping short strokes.
It took a long time to build up the many different colors in the grass without muddying the whole thing. So much of the field isn’t just green stuff , it’s dirt too: brown, yellow, gray, and green.
As I got closer to the end, I started going back in with colored pencils to sharpen my edges and increase contrast and texture in a few areas.
The rock and the horses were done last, and used a lot of colored pencil because of their tiny sharp details. Below is the finished painting at 11×14″
