Happy Labor Day, everyone! Today’s post is very on-theme, with a garment about labor. Recently my oldest friend bought a house that came with many chickens and a very fancy coupe. Apparently, it’s rather difficult to carry more than like four eggs at a time, especially if you need to carry other things or do other chores while collecting eggs. The solution for that is an apron that’s designed to carry eggs safely. An Eggpron.
This old and dear friend with so many chickens and so many eggs therefore commissioned me to make for her an apron up to the task of holding a whole bunch of eggs.
She chose the fabric herself and we worked out the length and pocket style together. It was a mathematics accomplishment to end up with 15 identical 3-dimensional pleated pockets made from only 3 lengths of fabric, meticulously folded and sewn so that the eggs would have a spacious mouth to slip into but a cozy, contoured bottom to sit in safely.
The apron is also of course fully lined with a nice cotton that I had on hand. I paid special attention during construction to ensure that the chickens were always upright–a joy working with patterned fabric.
Perhaps best of all, this is yet another example of a wonderfully complex garment sewn entirely of rectangles, my favorite!
