Right now it’s very difficult to look past the day-to-day. Long-term goals are hard to focus on in the stressful short term. As a form of relaxation I’ve returned to a very basic comfort by sketching what I’m thinking about: by sketching a food diary of all the calories helping me through the great pause.
When everything else in life is on hold, food remains a constant source of pleasure, creativity, and literal nourishment. The right foods can turn any evening into a special occasion; it’s why we indulge on vacation and holidays–food sets the mood. So like many around the world right now I’m turning to food to lift my spirits, syncopate my day, and bring me closer to my partner, the only in-person human contact that I have right now. Sharing a meal together, I don’t feel alone.
Not all the food that we’re eating right now is healthy; carbohydrates last longer in the pantry than do fresh vegetables. We’re having some difficulty finding meat, eggs, and other fresh foods even on the rare occasion that we do go to the store, which is having an impact on what we eat as much as the stress of the pandemic.
So, right now there’s a higher rate of potato pancakes, bagels, and taquitos than would normally be featured in our diet. How are you coping?
All sketches drawn with sharpie and copic marker.
