Our mailbox is no longer the most shameful one on the street! Last year, a distracted driver hit our already old and dilapidated mailbox one morning in the summertime. They also ran over a lily which has fortunately since recovered. Jake was able to twist and zip-tie the box back together until we had a chance to replace it, which took us a little while.
I had made an effort in the past to make the planting area around the box at least look cute to distract from how badly it needed replacing. But considering what happened with the driver and the explosion of metal, I’m glad we didn’t go out and buy a new one that first year in the house.
This is our new mailbox! A large “indestructible” model that Jake assembled. I dug the post hole and moved some flowers, and held it level while he poured the concrete. Side note: the Fourth of July is the best day to go to Home Depot. They had a full staff on hand but the store was empty. We got so much assistance! An associate advised us to buy a bag of concrete that didn’t even need mixing. You dump it in the hole, pour water on top and that’s it!
I made sure to put really big reflectors on it, and as my mom said to me the day we installed it, “I hope it’s a really long time before someone hits it.”
