Another pair of harem pants! It’s wintertime, and a warm pair of pants is a great garb solution. As I’ve expressed before, harem pants are a really easy one-afternoon project. However this pair I complicated for myself with the addition of pockets!
My pattern for harem pants doesn’t have a side seam, so to fashion pockets on the hips I had to cut slits down to the bottom of the pocket in order to insert them. It took a little fussing to get it all to lay smooth, but it’s the same principle as putting the pocket in a full seam. Spread the two sides, sew each pocket half to the right-side of the pant, flip the pocket over to reveal your finished side of the seam, then right-sides together sew the pocket halves and sides together in one go.
These pants are much heavier than my usual dance pants, which I like to keep light and flowy to aid in free movement. This pair is a heavy twill with a beautiful low-contrast diamond pattern woven throughout. The texture adds a lot of interest and will make for great layering.
I put elastics in the ankles on this pair to keep the heat in and help me slip these pants into winingas (leg wraps) or boots on a cold fair day.
Pockets are awesome. I made these ones big enough for my hands, cell phone, and a slim wallet. It’s tempting, I know, to make over-sized pockets on everything so you can hold an absurd amount of things. But take care not to let an overstuffed or extra low pocket weigh your garment down. You should be able to easily reach the bottom of your pocket by straightening your arm and without bending at the waist.
