A year after the big move I was still searching for a good fit in a new dance studio when I enrolled in a 3-week advanced winter session of Belly Dancing in a not-so-local movement arts space. Wanting to impress my new classmates with my array of dance attire, I decided to kick myself in gear and make a new pair of warm harem pants which I had conceived of and bought fabric for months prior.
Harem pants are one of those super easy garments that can be whipped up in an afternoon. I’ve been experimenting overtime with various fabric weights and ankle styles to make a collection of very different pants all from the same basic pattern. This pair of pants was inspired by a Renaissance pin on Pinterest and made possible by a killer remnant of fabric found at my awesome local textile warehouse. The fabric was unlabeled, but it feels like a heavy 2-way stretch cotton jersey. It has a great drape and is soft and cozy; a perfect fabric to move in.
The majority of the work was done on the surger, and only the waist-band actually went through the sewing machine. Talk about fast. I skipped pockets on these pants, breaking my new rule of pockets in everything, but I had a deadline to meet and the smooth hips sans-pocket does not offend me here.
I left the ankle wide because it feels more earthy to me, and this textured brown fabric is nothing but earthy.
