I made a sweater! I am on a mission to clean out some of my fabric stash by making each yard into the garment of its dreams. I have had this gorgeous lightweight cotton jersey sitting in a bin since Black Friday of….2014? Finally I’ve made it into a comfortable and interesting sweater courtesy of McCall’s 7199.
This pattern includes a front facing for the very flowy collar and front edge, so it ate up a good 2.5 yards of fabric which would have been more if I was working with a print. For anyone else looking to try the pattern M7199, this is view B. I found most of the pattern to be easy to follow. The only spot that gave me trouble was attaching the collar to the neckline. The neckline curves in sharply at the front center, but the collar and front facing are straight…….the two didn’t fit together very well. I cleaned it up, but the seam between the collar and neckline is almost always hidden.
The best part about this pattern is that it has pockets! All clothing is made better with pockets, and though I sometimes add them myself to things that aren’t patterned to include a pocket, it’s always easier when there’s a notch or two to help line everything up. Pockets are more convenient when someone else has made sure that they fall at the correct height on the body as well.
Other versions of the garment include fasteners for the front or a zipper that would make it look something like the photo below. However, I like the idea of simply being able to wrap myself in the flowing front panels for extra warmth.
