Arriving home after a half-day hike in the woods I attempted to recreate one of the beautiful landscapes that I came across by memory. Though the image seemed vivid in my mind, it is never preferred to recall an image by memory alone. Memory isn’t a reliable visual resource; most of us think we know what the world looks like, but we are usually wrong. Nevertheless I set about the sketch because I was eager to paint anything at all from that day.
This watercolor sketch is a very small 2×3″, painted with a field kit but in my living room. I used a ball point pen for the line work. An exercise in speed and loose form, the sketch took about 10 minutes.
