Last night I finished a cozy sweater for my mom. I’m trying to make more clothes for other people to improve my tailoring skills.
This sweater is made from plush “Luxe fleece” from Joann fabrics. It is thick, soft, and has minimal stretch. I used a pattern to make this sweater, but with some heavy alterations; the arms on the pattern are much too short for some reason, even on a short person like me, so I added cuff at the bottom to lengthen the sleeve. I also altered the length and shape of the bottom because I found the original design to be unflattering.
Assembly was quite simple; the whole coat is only 6 pieces, sewn together on the serger. The edges were finished on the regular sewing machine with a wide overcast stitch. The fleece won’t fray, so I didn’t need a folded hem or a serged edge. I chose a simple overcast because it would keep the edges neat, hide any unevenness, but not add bulk or change the drape of the fabric.
