Wow! It seems like its been such a long time since my last post! Things have been really crazy at school with midterms and final projects starting up. I actually have a lot of work that I need to post but there hasn’t been enough sun to photograph it all.
For now, I have a watercolor piece that I was able to scan. In watercolor class, we were assigned to make a copy of an oil painting in water color in order to teach us how to build up dark colors in a translucent medium. I choose the Comtesse D’Haussonville by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres because it was colorful and had striking edge-work. It did not take long into the painting for me to feel that I had bitten off more than i could chew. This was a really hard painting to copy. There were so many fine details and so many dark washes. I was using Hot press paper for the first time, which was difficult at first. The paper would make my washes very splotchy, and it took several tries to get a smooth color. Unfortunately, the scan of the image looks a lot more splotchy than my final painting does. You’ll have to trust me when I say that the real thing (both my version and the original) is much better blended.
There are very few decent reproductions on google. I copied my version from a book, and it was a lot less yellow, and a lot more green than most images on the internet.
