This week in makeup class I learned how to make safe-to-eat wounds using Gelatin and a few other house-hold items! Below I’ve provided a tutorial so that you can make these disgusting edible make-up props as well! Just in time for Halloween, too.
What you’ll need:
- One box of clear, unflavored Gelatin.
- 3/4 cup of water.
- A pot and stove, or crock pot in which to heat gelatin and water.
- Wax paper or cling wrap
- A spoon
- A coffee stirrer
- Q-tips
- Food Coloring
- Loose Tea leaves
- Other useful items may include oatmeal, cookie crumbs, and colored decorative gel (the kind you buy in a tube to decorate cakes with)
- First, heat up your water. You want it to be very hot to the touch but not boiling. Stir in the gelatin with the spoon until it is evenly dissolved in the water. Then turn off the heat.
- Lay out a piece of wax paper or cling wrap (wax paper is easier) and spoon a small bit of gelatin onto the paper. You don’t want the gelatin to be too runny when you spoon it out. It shouldn’t dribble away on the wax paper. If it is too runny, just give it a few minutes to cool off.
- Once you have a little gelatin on your wax paper, dip a Q-tip in a little blue or black food coloring, and color this layer of gelatin blue by dabbing it with the Q-tip. You will want to work on several wounds at once, so spoon out, and color multiple wounds. Start small, as they will grow as you add each new layer of gelatin.
- Once your bottom layer has had a minute or two to dry, spoon another layer of gelatin on top, and use the coffee stirrer to spread the gelatin so it overlaps the first layer. Color this layer with red and brown. You can also add some tea leaves, oat meal, or gel for texture. Color these additives red with your Q-tip.
- After this layer has become dry, but sticky add another layer of gelatin you may add more red if you want more blood, or leave this layer clear.
You’ll notice, as the gelatin in the pot cools, it gets thicker and clumpier. You may want to use some of this clumpy gelatin to create scars, burns, and gore. But you’ll need to fuse all the clumps together with thinner gelatin. To make your gelatin more liquid again, simply re-heat for a few minutes, and stir.
6. Add one or two clear layers of gelatin on top of your wounds to seal in the color, and to add thickness. Let harden until wounds can be pealed off wax paper in one piece.
And there you have it! Edible wounds for halloween!!
If you want, you can add different flavors to make your wounds more tasty. Try adding a little bit of fruit, or crushed cookies to your wounds for texture and taste. You can also use flavored decorative gels or syrups and jams. Experiment, and have fun.
If you are going to eat these wounds, you’ll want to do it the same day. If you leave them out for too long, they start to get crunchy and plasticy. This is fine though, if you want to stick them to your skin as part of a costume.
